If you are anything like me, you always seem to forget to charge your drill battery. Looking to buy an extra drill battery can be expensive and may be difficult to find the right battery for your brand of drill. Let me share with you some tips about drill batteries and their care.

One thing you should avoid is letting your battery drain completely and forgetting to recharge it. This is extremely unhealthy for the battery and it may even refuse to charge again. If you work on a job site, you may be tempted to eject the drained battery and toss it on to charge right away. Batteries become hot when they are charged so starting it off hot before it’s started the charging cycle is a bad idea. Batteries have known to explode or break open due to excessive heat.

This goes without saying but using the proper charging unit for your drill batteries is a must. When you do have the correct charger, make sure that you charge the battery completely and let it cool off before using it. People have a tendency to charge the battery for 10 or 15 minutes which is not nearly enough time. Usually there is a green light that will turn on or a red light that will turn off when the battery has finished charging. Many rechargeable drill batteries don’t have a memory in terms of when you charge, but they will be affected if you remove it early.

One of the best investments you can buy for your drill is extra batteries. Battery packs always seem to die in the middle of something you’re doing or fail to even start when you are ready to work.

If you have a new drill, then now is the best time to buy extra batteries. Manufacturers tend to stop making OEM batteries quite quickly. But if you do happen to have an older drill that needs some new batteries there are a few options at your disposal.

-     EBay or other auction sites are a great place to find drill batteries. It is also a good place to find some extra tools at a bargain price.

-     Craigslist and other classified advertising networks are a great way as well. Many people will have extra batteries or just wanting to get rid of their tools. Sometimes you may be able to pick up the exact same drill for less than the cost of a new battery.

-     Inside your instruction manual or inside the drill battery covering there will be information on where to find replacement batteries.

I hope that these tips will help you care for and find replacement drill batteries. Even following these simple guidelines you can extend your batteries lifetime and save money for other fancy tools.
